In 1924, workers at a Standard Oil plant in New Jersey began hallucinating, convulsing, and dying, poisoned by the tetraethyl lead they were adding to gasoline to stop engines from knocking. The company’s spokesman offered a memorable explanation at the time: the men had probably gone insane from working too hard. It would take another half century, and the EPA’s own decades-long regulatory campaign, before leaded gasoline finally disappeared from American pumps. New research suggests the country is still paying down that debt, in the memories of the people who breathed that air as children.

A 20% Higher Risk, Fifty Years Later

The finding, first presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference, comes from an analysis of more than 600,000 American adults age 65 and older. Researchers calculated historical atmospheric lead levels by area during the years leaded gasoline use peaked, 1960 through 1974, then compared those levels against self-reported memory problems collected decades later, in adulthood. People who had grown up in areas with moderate to extremely high atmospheric lead during that window were 20% more likely to report memory problems as older adults, half a century removed from the exposure itself.

Study author Eric Brown, of Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, put the stakes plainly: the findings may help us understand the pathways that contribute to some people developing dementia. That’s a careful way of saying something less careful researchers might have said more bluntly. The air a child breathed on the way to school in 1968 may still be shaping how well their brain holds onto memory today.

Blood lead levels in American children during the mid-1970s ran roughly 15 times higher than children’s blood lead levels today, and 88% of children measured at the time carried levels now considered dangerously high by current standards. Roughly half the U.S. population, more than 170 million people, was exposed to elevated lead in early childhood before regulators intervened.

That exposure didn’t stay confined to childhood, either. A companion study presented at the same conference, covered in detail by Medscape, found that older adults currently living near lead-emitting facilities, glass manufacturers, ready-mix concrete plants, electronics producers, showed worse cognitive performance just two years later than people living farther away. Trade press coverage of the findings noted that researchers deliberately avoided pinpointing a single source of the historical lead, though high-density automobile traffic stood out as the leading suspect. Lead exposure, in other words, isn’t purely a story about the past. For some people, it’s a story still being written.

The mechanism researchers have proposed helps explain why the damage lingers so long after the exposure itself ends. Even relatively low levels of lead appear capable of producing permanent changes inside brain cells, including increased buildup of abnormal tau and amyloid beta, the same two proteins central to Alzheimer’s disease. That’s a strange kind of continuity across very different origin stories: a protein whose healthy job normally involves organizing how the brain stores memory can be pushed toward disease-driving misbehavior by an industrial additive banned from gasoline before most of today’s grandchildren were born.

A more recent study, published in February 2026 by researchers at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, adds a sharper layer of evidence to this same picture. Rather than relying on historical estimates or current blood levels, this team measured lead stored in bone, a marker of cumulative lifetime exposure rather than a single snapshot. People with the highest bone lead levels had nearly three times the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and more than double the risk of dementia overall compared with those carrying the lowest levels. Current blood lead levels, notably, showed no significant connection to dementia risk at all. It isn’t what’s circulating in someone’s blood this year that matters most. It’s the decades of accumulation quietly stored in the skeleton.

None of this is grounds for panic among people who grew up breathing leaded exhaust, since, as Brown has noted, that particular exposure can’t be undone at this point. What clinicians can do instead is treat historical lead exposure as one more reason to take the modifiable risk factors seriously, blood pressure, smoking, social isolation, the same factors that show up again and again across dementia prevention research, and that researchers have found carry different weight depending on where in the world someone actually lives.

There’s a broader lesson sitting underneath the specific finding too, one that echoes almost exactly what researchers have found about other substances that behave very differently depending on their source and context: exposure history matters as much as exposure amount, and a body carries its environment forward for far longer than anyone assumed when the last leaded gas pump went dark. Standard Oil’s spokesman was wrong in 1924, and the story he was trying to bury took just about a century to fully surface.
